The New Policy for Health in Europe


Improving health for all and reducing health inequities

11-16 November 2012 - Florence, Italy

The FIT course supports the three main aims of the new WHO European health policy - Health 2020: improving health for all, reducing health inequities, and strengthening governance for health. The FIT course is built around 5 modules:

1.  social determinants of health and health inequities;

2.  prevention and control of noncommunicable diseases (NCDs);

3.  the lifecycle approach: from early life to healthy ageing;

4.  health and migration

5.  health systems planning.

The FIT course is a six-day intensive training programme organized by the Tuscany Region in Italy in collaboration with the WHO European Office for Investment for Health and Development in Venice. The course official language is English.

The FIT course aims to provide participants with knowledge about best practices, examples of what works, and practical know how applicable to their professional activities. Participants will have the opportunity to refine their skills through structured discussions about addressing the social and economic determinants of health, strengthening multisectorial policies and approaches to health, and increasing governance capacity to tackle these challenges. The participants themselves will be an important resource of information and experiences. Ultimately, the goal of the FIT programme is to help prepare the next generation of European public health experts.


The Course is designed for young health professionals 35 years or under, and there are 10 bursaries being offered. Priority will be given to applicants living/working in one of the 53 Member States of the WHO European Region.

The FIT faculty will include experts from Padua University (Italy), Maastricht University (Netherlands), University of Liverpool (UK), University of Siena (Italy), University of Florence (Italy), the WHO Regional Office for Europe and other European institutions.
