the urban dimension and the role of local government

WHO Regional Office for Europe

Copenhagen, Denmark – 2012

“………..This report summarizes the evidence on the social determinants of health in the urban context, drawing on the findings of the global Commission on Social Determinants of Health and the European review of social determinants of health and the health divide.

It also highlights how, through its leadership, local government can play a significant role in addressing these causes of health inequalities, by working across sectors and with civil society partners.

This report provides a helpful overview of practices from across Europe, and identifies priority action areas and key implementation issues, to support and accelerate the growing interest of local governments in being sensitive and proactive in tackling inequities…..”

This report highlights country progress—and obstacles to progress—towards achieving Millennium Development Goals 4 and 5 to reduce child mortality and improve maternal health.

Countdown to 2015 focuses on:

·         on evidence based solutions—health interventions proven to save lives—and on the health systems, policies, financing and broader contextual factors that affect the  equitable delivery of these interventions to women and children

·         on data, because building a better future and protecting the basic human right to life require understanding where things stand right now and how they got to where they are today

·         on what happens in countries—where investments are made or not made, policies are implemented or not implemented, health services are received or not received and women and children live or die
